TEACHING TOPIC: WHAT SHOULD I FEED MY PET? (repost)

1. There is no one food that is best for every animal.
2. The answer is best discussed individually with your vet - taking into consideration your pets health.
3. “Grain free” diets are a marketing ploy - new research indicates an increase in dilated cardiomyopathy (irreversible heart disease) associated with feeding these foods since they are not correctly formulated.
4. There are different benefits and risks with dry vs. canned that is best determined on an individual basis.
5. Feeding a food that has been formulated and researched by a veterinary nutritionist and mets AAFCO regulations is usually the best choice for pets. (Hill’s science diet, Royal Canin, Eukanuba, Iams and Purina are the top 5 companies that fit this description)
6. Homemade diets can also be prepared but it is best to contact your vet for a “recipe” that takes all vitamins and minerals into consideration. There is also a website run by veterinary nutritionist that helps you formulate an individual diet for your pet.
