WHY DOES MY PET'S BREATH STINK?

This is a common question!  The one word answer is - BACTERIA.  I know what you are thinking, well it must be because they lick their butt….. Yes and No.  Bacteria clings onto tartar on the teeth.  Then as it sits next to the gumline it multiplies in numbers (and stinkiness).  The bacteria encourages more tartar buildup and the stinky smell increases.

How can you stop this cycle?

The best way to halt stinky breath in its tracks is DAILY brushing.  Brushing removes plaque (filmy stuff left on the teeth after eating).  Plaque can easily be brushed away.  If it is allowed to sit for 24-48 hours, though, the plaque will turn into tartar.  Tartar becomes cemented onto the teeth and can only be removed with an ultrasonic scaling.  Since pet’s don’t like to sit in the dentist chair, anesthesia is required to do an appropriate teeth cleaning.  If you have more questions about your pet’s teeth and breath, let us know, 277-1883.
