Pet of the Month - December 2013 - Kaylee

I met Kaylee, as many people do now, on Facebook. :-)  A friend of mine fosters animals from the Humane Society and she posts pictures of the ones she's not adopting herself (occupational hazard of fostering).  I was in the market to add a cat back into my home, but with a beagle, Phoebe, who had clearly made it HER home, I also wanted to be sure that they would get along.  So my friend agreed to bring Kaylee over for a meet and greet to see how the two did together.  There was lots of sniffing and a little bit of growling but over all things went really well and so we agreed to adopt her.  Integrating them both into the house went amazingly well.  We set up a baby gate in the door to the basement that Phoebe was too, shall we say, "gravity challenged" to jump over but Kaylee could scale with ease so she could escape to her "safe space."  Now they get along great, and I even catch them curling up together on a blanket (especially when there's a lap under the blanket).  Kaylee's also WAY more of a climber (tree dweller) than either of my previous cats had been (both bush dwellers) and I have to say, it's a total game changer.  It only took her 2 days to figure out she could make it onto the kitchen counters from the floor and now she easily makes it to the top of the bureau in the bedroom.  All of my plants have been moved to the top of the kitchen cabinets but it's only a matter of time before she makes it up there too. She LOVES the mylar "crinkly" balls and will play fetch with anyone who tosses one.  I've had to buy about 20 of them because they disappear around the house.  Feathers on strings are also a hit.  We've only had her since August and she's already managed to "kill" two of those toys.  I have no doubt that if she ever got out, we would have all sorts of "presents" brought back for us.  :-)  Overall she's been a great addition to the house and I think everyone has embraced (or at least tolerates) her crazy kitten energy!
